I have a 39 Lasalle, the column shifter is having trouble ca thing the gears,I really have to baby to be able to go from 9ne gear to another, now someone told me it was the spring in the column and the lever itself that is worn out ,can anyone help me out and let me know what the parts are called and where I can get them, thank you

Steve Passmore

A lot of trouble can be caused by the linkages not adjusted correctly. There is usaly a set adjustment procedure for each year in the manual.

I agree with Steve. While all parts would have some wear, having the linkages adjusted correctly may very well get everything close enough to shift better. If you don't have the manual to find the adjustment procedure I can post them in here for you. There is a special tool that can be used for the adjustment but it is not needed. It is more of a convenience thing as the adjustment can be performed without it.

Yes if you could post that here that would help our alot and as far as the linkage goes how would I go about adjusting that I can shift from reverse to first fine, and from 2nd to 3rd fine it just seems to have a really hard time shifting from 1st to 2nd, thanks for the help

When you pull the gear lever up through the neutral 'Gate' the shaft engages with the 1st and reverse lever to the transmission, when you drop down through the 'Gate' the lever for 2nd and 3rd is engaged. All this happens at the bottom of the column so adjustment down there is important..

I think John Washburn (Washburn's Wisdom in the Self Starter) owns a shift lever adjustment tool so you might want to ask him if you could borrow it.  (He is in the CLC directory in Colorado.)  At the same you could ask him for any hints / tips on how do the job, though other than climbing under the car it's not tricky or difficult.

Folks,

Finally found a machine shop who would reproduce the tool for a reasonable price.

Bad news is I won't be able to take the original one to him till I get back from vacation on May 5th.

But this tool will make adjustment a lot easier. Plus it is better to do this adjustment first to make sure it is the adjustment not a transmission problem.

Off to NAPA Valley to drink wine.

The shifter adjustment should be able to be done from the top. Thanks to the handy removable apron panels.  :D
