Trying to help someone find the engine VIN stamping on a '73 Eldo.  He's found the block casting number, where in the VIN stamping in relation to the casting number?  A picture would be awesome.

I have a 331 and a 472 in my garage but no 500 right now!

Thanks,
Scott

The engine number, stamped into the block, not raised like the casting number, is in the other side of the "V" at the back of the block right next to the casting number.  Not easy to spot if it is at all dirty and greasy back there and may require some cleaning first to see it.  Same location as a 472.

George is correct.   I will add that I have seen at least a dozen of this era engines and maybe only one of them I was confident I could read all the digits.   Most cases only a couple are clear.  I have some that were so faint even out of the car and clean you could not make em out.

On Monday the stamper guy on the line must have had a hangover and not wanted make a loud bang and by Friday was too tired to give a good swing.    Like Johnny Cash said you want one that was built on Wednesday.

I can make out enough of the digits to know the engine is original, so mission accomplished.
