1964 429 into a 1966

a friend has purchased a rebuilt 1964 429 to put in his 66 DeVille Convertible.  He is having trouble.  Is there a trick to installing an early 429 where a later one was?

Hello Jim,

The '64 shop manual mentions an adapter plate when removing a TH400 from a '64 429.  Because '64 Cadillacs came with either a TH400 transmission or a Hydramatic transmission, I think the adapter plate was used only in '64.  Your friend's rebuilt '64 429 may be missing the adapter plate needed to mate with his '66s TH400 transmission.

The motor mount location is different on the 65 and up years.  64 has the mount location close to the front of the block.  65 was moved to more the center of the block.
Its going to take frame surgery, or the correct block.

There was an article in the Self Starter about how different the 429 engine was year to year from 64 thru 67.  Contrary to the 472/500 series parts (and I guess frames) do not all interchange.
