'31 Cadillac Hood Support

Does anyone know of a method for supporting the hood on a '31 Cadillac?  Each of the hood sections are heavy after installing the vent doors.  Opening one side and laying it on the other seems like a bad idea due to the stress it would put on the hinge and the damage it could do to the paint.  Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,

With most cars just laying it over was what they intended but I know what you mean about doing that when you have just had a car painted.

My 1929 Roadster came with these little chrome dots on both sides of the piano hinge.

When you open the hood, one side of the hood never touches the other side, it just rests on these dots.

Your right though about putting undue torque on the hinge when the hood is lifted and laid to rest.  I just go real easy to keep the stress to a minimum.

Look at these chrome dots, I would have guessed that a '31 would of had something like it.

I made this work on my 31 with a little modification.

That's what I used on my 31 Sedan and 31 convertible coupe. Easy, inexpensive, no permanent mods, looks fine installed, and works great.

Thanks for your replies - will try laying one side gently on the other but am ordering the hood prop.

Actually if things are correct the hood does not lay on and touch the paint. There is some clearance.

I've seen others use a heavy blanket (furniture pad?) between the open hood halves.
