lasalle 322 upper timing gear
« on: January 15, 2016, 03:21:35 PM »
Hi,i am in the process of removing the timing chain and gears and I am looking for any info on removing the upper gear  .I have so far removed the nut at the end of cam and there is a piece that drives the fuel pump and it doesn't seem like my puller will work.I need to remove the crank shaft and have removed rods.Is there any thing else I should look out  for. Thanks Ron

The cam that drives the fuel pump usually just pulls of the cam shaft with a little effort then both the crank gear, the cam gear and chain have to slide off together. You have to gently ease off each one in turn a tiny bit at a time. I use small tyre levers.

Hi,seems to be some damage.I don't see anything major but the nut barely starts and then stops.
Thank you again for the help.

If the nut does that no matter which way around to try to fit it then the trouble is with the tread on the camshaft, unless you can visibly see if its a different thread. Was it on there before or are you messing with an engine that someone else took apart?

I did take it off then after I removed the gear I wanted to put it on so it didn't get lost or damaged.

The camshaft sprocket nut is  3/4" - 16 and the nut is 3/8" thick.  Go down to an industrial supply store that sells nuts and bolts and buy a new one.  I got one just a couple of months ago from my local store.  I would also recommend that you get a copy of the Army's light tank manual TM9-1729A.  The CLC Modified chapter has an electronic copy available and I think there is a reference to a copy on this forum.  If you are going to rebuild your engine then this is the best source for information I have found so far.
