Tell us about your garage!  Reading the what light do  you use got me on this topic.

My detached garage is across from the right side of my house separated by 40 feet width of asphalt that has a 3 car side load garage on house.  The detached garage is 32 feet wide and 27 feet depth with two nine foot wide garage doors six feet apart.  This way you can get three cars inside with space to work on one easy.  There is a peninsula work shop room 14 foot square on left side in photo.  It has stairs up to a storage area that is about 40' long by 20' wide usable (second picture, of course it is all filled up).  There is a carport on right side of picture.  Planning on expanding it to a second carport.  These pictures were taken just after construction and before painting about 7 years ago.

I'm an HVAC, electrical and plumbing engineer so of course the garage is heated and cooled with geothermal.  240V-1 electrical service is provided via 125 amp panel.  Did not install a bathroom, or my family would never see me again.

Because my neighborhood has strict rules could not do a metal building or a real high garage for a lift.  Probably just as well as it would be an eye sore next to my house.  Officially there is parking for on my property, 5 in garage and one carport.

Anyway very happy with it.

When I first got into the hobby my attached garage with 8' ceiling and 9' wide doors was my work space, with 24' depth (deep for a normal house garage).  Got a little cramped, but I got by with it until the new one was built (completed in March 2009).

Thanks,

Scot

Very nice space; I can only dream about that.
As a contrast my storage space, which must be about the smallest on this forum  ::).
I am also an HVAC engineer (what a coincidence!), but no heating in my garage; only a dehumidifier.

It's not small, 59 Cadillac is just huge. All a matter of perspective  :D

Up until 11 months ago, it was outside. Real fun in the cold and rain... Especially when we did the engine.
Now at least we have a garage. .

Felko that is awesome. Must be fun parking and trying to get out! Have some Kaas and Genever for me, Nederland = one of my favorite places.
Scot, I think you have one of the nicest garages around!
Here's my former wood shop overtaken and used mostly for my toys. 30x40 two-bay upper shop with 10' ceilings and 2nd floor storage attic. Heated but no AC. Down below are 4 more single bays 25' deep and on top my 17kW solar system for the main house. Not planning on a lift as several friends always offer theirs. Cheers, Prost, and happy motoring!

This seemed to be plenty of space until I bought two more cars, but it is probably for the best, it forces me to stop looking ( sort of ;)

Hi All. My car corral holds four vehicles. The main garage is 24x28 with two 9 foot wide doors. The side (tandem) garage is 12x40 with a 9 foot wide door. From inside the main garage there is a 3 foot wide entry door into the side garage. The building is insulated and heated with a 60,000BTU Hot Dawg propane heater. My future plan is to raise the roof of the main garage so I can accommodate a couple more vehicles. I use LED four foot long ceiling lights, which light the space up perfect for me to work. I also use LED trouble lights when necessary. The driveway is 36 feet wide and about 60 feet to the street which provides me plenty of off street parking.

Ok,
I see a common thread here for those who live on large chunks of land - I'm jealous.
I see multiple garages - I'm jealous.
Scott, I though that was your home at first until you said it was your garage - thought it was what I would like - small house and many garages.
Feiko, I could tell from your photos two things - you have good taste in a 59 and second you must be skinny to get in the car - I'm jealous.
Marty, now that's just showing off - I'm jealous
Now here's how the other less fortunate folks live in cramped subdivisions in Calif.
And no the car does not have a flat, or bad springs, it's on a floor jack.
Have fun,
Steve B.

Steve , I am fortunate to be on a lot that is just under 1/2 acre ( except when its time to mow the lawn).  I wanted to make the garage a little wider but my wife had this silly idea that she didn't want to look out of the dining room to see a garage door, go figure  :-\

Marty,

Wives have a lot of influence on garage design.  That is a whole separate topic probably.  My wife has approved a carport addition, and I'm on it (that would be two car ports).

I'm trying to get also a 24 x 24 non-descript storage space in the woods, metal building that you don't see too easy.

Great stuff guys ^^^

I worked out of a 3 car garage for many years but the 59 barely fit and I had to move it every time I wanted to work on the Brougham. This was the motivation for the current setup.

2 car attached to the house, 4 car (20x40) next to it and 36x47 behind that.

The 36x47 I worked on for the last year as it was just an empty pole barn. Doesn't look like much from the outside and there are no windows. I replaced some of the trusses for lift clearance and built a 36x16 storage loft. Epoxy/urethane floor, heat and a/c.

Jim,
Your 36 x 47 garage here in 95120 (Silicon Valley) would fetch nearly $1.2Mil.  At that price there would be multiple cash offers!  Please live the dream of "car space" for the land poor here on the West Coast.

A 24 x 24 attached for the daily driver and recently acquired '41.  A 25 x 30 stick built detached for the '53 project.  The 25 x 30 was unfinished inside when I bought the place 3 years ago, so I panneled and insulated it, and put in the biggest thru-the-wall A/C unit that Home Depot had so I could work in comfort durring those 100 deg Texas summers.  Have 1 1/2 acres so could could put up a metal building, but I am happy with what I have have for now.

My house is a typical 3 bedroom ranch with a two car garage on a 1.3 acre lot. We bought it right before we were married in 1997. It also had a 30' x 40' outbuilding. It was love at first sight. I knew of a 1940 Lasalle for sale at the time and now I had a place to go with it. The outbuilding could be described as a "pole barn" Wood frame, metal skin, sliding barn doors and a gravel floor. I had a concrete floor installed before we moved in. I bought the Lasalle and started working on it. After a while however, I started to realize the shortcomings of this space. Warm humid days after cold weather would cause everything inside to sweat with condensation. Newly restored parts on the Lasalle were rusting. Leaves blew in through the roof vent. There was a 5 foot black snake living in the barn. I knew because it would leave its shed skins behind. It left other stuff behind too. And then there were the mice. I had to improve this building to make it a useable workshop.
I installed a ceiling to the bottom of the roof trusses. I put studs up and finished the walls. I insulated the attic and walls. I replaced the barn doors and a small overhead door with quality insulated steel overhead doors. I replaced a people door with an insulated steel one and a faulty double hung window with one having insulated glass. I reused the existing fluorescent light fixtures and added some new ones. I tore out all the existing shelves and built new sturdy ones that suited my uses.
I was using a 115,000 btu kerosene heater. It put out enough heat but it was loud and emitted smelly and dangerous fumes. I replaced it with a permantly installed natural gas heater that hung from the ceiling. I had a gas line run out to the barn. I leave it on all winter so I can now work out there anytime.
All these improvements mean I can control the temperature, the condensation, and the varmints. I did all this gradually over a 19 years as time and money allowed. My next and final improvement will be air conditioning. Then I can control the humidity year round. Changes in humidity make the wood I use for woodworking warp.

Great thread!  I am enjoying all the pictures and photos.  Fortunately my suburban two car attached-garage house was built in 1963 and I still have a couple feet of room behind my 1970 DeVille convertible when it is pulled all the way in.  No extra space for any equipment, but we just move the family van out of the way and park in the middle of the garage to get projects done.  Limits us from any major work, it has to be something that can get done in an afternoon.  And I am fortunate to have a friend with a classic car collection he stores in a heated airplane hangar, the Cadillac sleeps in there during the winter with his collection.

Beautiful garage that was posted by, INTMD8 no trace of vehicle maintenance or a very good cleaning :)
I think some bright elements would look really cool in it, like this checkered garage stool for instance: http://www.carid.com/atd/shop-stool-with-checker-design-mpn-81055.html

I am getting some good ideas. I currently live in a very large house with a 4 car garage (52 by 30) but it is not enough. My partner wants to keep her new Lincoln in the garage and it is currently outside.  I am shopping for a place further out of town now. I hope to find at least an acre and today I am looking at  a nice rambler on an acre at an airport. It has a 3 car garage and plenty of room for a really big detached shop and garage also. Keep posting pictures so I can finalize my ideas for a dream garage.

A lot of nice garages and ideas. We bought our house in 1981 with a just completed 30'X60' detached garage. The only thing left to do was the electric and then begin filling it up. There is electric heat which is adequate for most times and a 5' deep 14'X14' pit on the far end. Mu first choice would have been a 4 post lift which I may get around to some day. Another "round to it" is to clean out and organize.      Harry
