Is there supposed to be some sort of filter in the glass bowl of this 1937 fuel pump ? There appears to be a very fine mesh at the base of the bowl . Should there be something else in the bowl ? Thanks , Paul Tesone CLC # 6876

Paul,
If I'm not mistaken, that's the filter. It's like a 100 mesh Monel Screen type, similar to what's used on a fuel pump sock. It's pretty fine and traps everything.

That's not at the base of the bowl Paul, your looking at it upside down. When fitted the mesh will be at the top and as Bobby said it is the filter but the glass bowl does most of the filtering by itself anyway as sediment drops to the bottom.
Don't worry about the pump not being the correct one for 37. The later ones with replaceable valves like this is better. The older pumps had 'flapper valves' which relied on a perfect interior die cast surface to seal to, or not :o.

In fact a filter would clog it, as the sediment would settle on top of filter and pile up and plug the screen. Up on top of engine you can install a glass bowl filter arrangement in the line. Art

Not quite so Art as when that pump is up the right way the fuel enters through the centre hole visible and drops in the bowl, it then has to rise up through the screen and out a different outlet to the carburetor so sediment couldn't settle on the top of the screen but will always be below it.  I have two such pumps on the shelf.
