does anyone know of a more common starter and solenoid that  will crank up a 41 60 special ? seems to be near impossible to find one thats original. . we took the starter apart and one of the soldered wires broke off  under the connection for the wires that go on top.  it had been repared but might have been loose which accounted for the click clich on trying to start it.  i really dont know what s on my car now  . seems like some other starter would work  . the number on m y solenoidis 929-6  and the rest are obliterated . the number on the starter is is 1107-6 and the rest are obliterated.  if i could tell what these came off of perhaps they would be obtainable at a reasonale price.  someone things they may be off a buick straight 8.  any ideas appreciated thanks john

John: Again the 41 starter for your car carried a number of 1107908. So could your number what you say is a 6 be an 8. What do you call a reasonable price? If you find the correct starter with the correct solenoid  you probably will pay $175-200 plus shipping and then it might need rebuilt. The complete starter with solenoid weighs 30 lbs packed for shipping. I would call Steve Cooley in Florida who has Cadillac parts. His number is 352-382- 2271 or 352-628-1398.   Bill

No John, the starter on your car definitely didn't come off a Buick 8. Their starters are on the opposite side of the engine and had a reversed end casting.  Twice in the past we have had a machine shop cut the end casting, turn it and re-weld to suit Cadillac's required position but they are not a straight fit.
There are plenty of flathead starters out there but as Bill said very heavy and too expensive to ship and people hold on to them for spares.  I have seen them on eBay sell cheaply because of the high shipping cost and unknown condition.   I have several spares but I dread to think what the transatlantic shipping would be.

I've sent a 1941 Generator in a USPS flat rate box across the country for $17.95.  A starter will possibly fit with the solenoid removed.

If you do talk to Steve Cooley, ask him about the guy somewhere near him in FL that does high quality starter/generator rebuilding (can't remember the name).  Anyway, Steve has sold me rebuildable cores and shipped direct to him to be rebuilt, and I paid that shop separately.  It will save at least one shipping trip charge to do it that way.

John; If Steve does not have what you need I now have the correct starter and correct solenoid for your car which I thought were sold but are back on the market. Both together $160 PLUS POSTGE from Scottsdale AZ and tags say the starter checks OK as well as solenoid but I did not test so they might need a rebuild. No guarantee.  I will try to ship as one package with UPS. To me the starter just alone weighs too much for a the strength from UPS large flat rate box to safely arrive in GA.   Bill
