Thanks for adding me....I'm am old car guy from Ct. I have the opportunity to buy a very solid 1938 Lasalle 4dr sedan. The motor turns but not sure of it's condition. Are there any other later model Caddy engines or anything else that will bolt to the existing bell housing etc with minimal trouble. Looking for the easiest swap possible. I am not looking to do a motor rebuild on the original motor.I do not want to turn this into a major project and install a later model Chevy engine or anything. I just want a nice old driver for the summer.

Any engine block up until 1948 will fit including any Cadillac V8 which will have more power than your LaSalle engine as it's more cubic inch but there are differences with some of the auxiliaries. No problem if you swap your parts onto the replacement block.   There are visible differences in the heads and the later engine will have slightly different water pump, fuel pump and fan bracket but it will all fit.

James,
Steve is correct, only another Flathead engine, up to '48. You are correct in thinking that if the engine doesn't run, you're getting into a major project, because you will be. My advice is either to try and get the existing engine in the car running with minimal effort, or look for another RUNNING Flathead motor to swap into the car. Make sure you hear it run. Don't rely on someone telling you that it ran when it was removed. Do you have any experience or knowledge regarding the Flathead V8 engine? It can be tricky, but we are here to help....
