i have removed 41 aav-26 carb. off car and its sat on white paper a day and not leaked on the paper. its still full of gas. would not this eliminate the possible of internal leaks from the carb   ? i have also removed the fuel pump for tomorrows checking of the diaphram etc. ideas ????? thanks john

John,
Hi.  A carb that's running rich is technically not leaking, so don't eliminate the choke or the carb settings being too rich. Try the fuel pump and let us know. Process of elimination, you'll get your answer. Good Luck!

A carb sat on the bench even full of fuel is not under the pressure of the fuel pump. When the engine is running the pump could be overpowering the flout needle.

I have had a similiar problem. I had a ton of gas dumping raw fuel into the oil causing a bad lifter tick. I replaced the fuel pump which solved the problem for awhile, then it slowly crept up on me again.

I believe it's due to my carb setting being too rich (no black smoke from tailpipe though) and the choke sticking sometimes forcing me to have my foot on the gas in order to keep it running when cold, thus the carb is dumping raw fuel into the crankcase slowly over time severely thinning out the oil, because I yet again, have a lifter tick. Once I change the oil, the ticking goes away.

So I would definitely look at the choke setting and operation.

took carb apart found u shaped spring missing from float . had to make a spring. also float level was set to high. will put on tomorrow. we did not take fuel pump apart we think the problem was all carb. john

The spring only holds the needle in position and wouldn't cause your problems. The flout however is a different matter but if it was set too high you should have seen some result of this at least when idling.   It would run badly and choke up.    This could definably cause your problem with the oil too as when you switch off the engine the pressure remaining in the pump will continue to dump fuel in the manifold until the pressure in the pump stops and the level in the chamber drops.
