1960 Air cleaner

What is the correct air cleaner lid,all black or with a red half inch ring. What is the red ring for?

If you are talking about a Tri Power air cleaner and lid, the red ring you see is the air filter. Some are red some are black but without the air filter installed the lid would fall into the opening because it is smaller than the opening at the top.
