I have a spare gas tank that has been stored for 30 years in dry storage but unknown storage before that.  It has the original, but no good sending unit.  The tank had a great deal of black, carbon like gravel that I emptied out but does not appear to have been rusty.  No rust through at all.  Had the original hose clamps and hose.  My question is this.  I have an acceptable tank on my car that was cleaned and tested by pros and I an trying to decide if this tank is worth saving or cleaning.  New tanks are probably available????  So in the interest of down sizing, what do readers think about saving this tank?  I plan to see if my car has the original clamps and can use/save those but the cork float sending unit looks like junk.

And would old tanks with dry gas have a black, hard compound inside?

They certainly would. I have seen it many times. If I was in your country I would take it off your hands. Someone will need it even though new ones are available.

Steve,
Do you realize all the good stuff you have to pass on because of geographics..... >:(

Mike,
New tanks are available, and believe it or not, they fit pretty damn good. My old tank wasn't bad, but there was no way that I was chancing it with a new carb, new engine, new lines, etc. Just to have it cleaned and coated would've been over 1/2 the cost of new, plus the labor and aggravation if something happens. If they weren't available, that would be a different story.......

Thanks for the response(s).  I have enough stuff to warehouse.  Sounds like metal recycling is in order.
