I plan to torque the axle nuts on my 1940 LaSalle as has been suggested.  Hoping to stop the clank when I put the car in gear. The manual says 285 to 315 lbs.  Do I just remove the hub cap: bend back the keeper and then torque the nuts.  Can I do this with the wheel/tire still on?  I have to buy a 1 5/8 socket tomorrow and borrow a torque wrench.

Is that all there is to it?  Sorry to be so ignorant about these things.

You will probably have to have someone pressing on the brake pedal to stop the axle turning.

Or, if nobody else is around, nudge the car up against a wall, and then tighten up the nut.   The wall should stop the car from moving forwards, or backwards whichever is the case.
