I recently found myself in Salt Lake City with some time to kill, and came across a "museum"-collection of mostly mid-century American cars that was heavy on Cadillacs.  The "museum" is in two buildings, a shop area and a large, warehouse packed to the gills with a wide range of cars, ranging from an Auburn speedster and a '54 Rolls limo to a couple of early 50's Nashes and a '56 Studebaker with power windows.  But you want to hear about the Cadillacs. A '41 4 door convertible, '49 and '54 Fleetwoods, a '56 Seville, a '57 Fleetwood 60S,  a number of '59's, ranging from a "parade convertible" made from a CDV to several '59 Fleetwoods, a '60 Seville identical to mine (Champagne) that even has the aftermarket 2 tone accent stripe that mine had when I bought it (since removed), and a '61 convertible, among others.  Some of the cars are for sale, and some are not (I have a separate thread on that under cars for sale). The condition of the cars range from nice originals to projects/works in progress, and  most of the collection is pretty dusty, but it was still a lot of fun.   Anyway, if you find yourself in SLC with some time on your hands, check it out:

Marty:

Yes, the current proprietor is his son, Stacey, who explained that his dad had passed away a couple of years ago.    If you're close by, you should definitely check it out.  Call ahead to make sure they're open; I'm not sure they keep consistent hours.  And bring a camera with a good flash.

Eric-

Thanks for fixing that. When I compose, they are right side up, but some of the pics seem to get flipped when I post.

I wonder why you had museum in quotation marks.  Sure sounds like a museum to me.

I put museum in quotation marks because it is really more like a warehouse/ dealer. Don't expect carpets, decent lighting, info about the cars or much else.  Most of the cars are not so much displayed as jammed together.

Your quotes are well placed.

Just as there are big differences to the use of word "restored" there are big differences between a 'museum' and a 'collection' and an 'accumulation'.

Museum has its own meaning - from Latin museum "library, study," from Greek mouseion "place of study, library or museum, school of art or poetry,"

A bunch of stuff really is nothing but an accumulation or a warehouse.
A true MUSEUM is more closely related to a school or university.  A true MUSEUM will have ongoing research, learning, study and teaching as an integral part of its existence.

BTW - An accumulation is a bunch of stuff. A collection is a where each item has been specifically chosen and are somehow related to each other. (All convertibles, All 1950s cars, All first or last examples)

The more closely related the items are to each other (and the more study, teaching or learning they perform) determines the QUALITY of the overall collection.

Plus, if it is classed as a Museum, then under most regulations, the place requires all the public necessities such as toilets, disabled access, etc, whereas a private collection does not.
