Is a 1941 Cadillac rim jack the same as a 1941 Buick rim jack ? Thank you in advance        Mike Patla #23389

Barry M Wheeler #2189

I have owned both, and the Buick one is slightly smaller and less robust. I was late for work once when I was driving my 1941 Series 6719F (one of 95) back and forth to work. I had a flat on the LR and found that I needed a rock or whatever to keep the car from rolling (first to the front, then the back) while on the rim jack. I finally got the job done but they are not a "fun" thing to use in actuality.

The Buick was a '41 Century that I kept breaking exhaust manifolds. I think I obtained every Roadmaster (up to 1952) exhaust manifold set in central Indiana while I drove that one back and forth to work.

Just so there is no "Why were you driving a collector car to work" comments, this was in the late sixties when the cars were not all that valuable. And in the main, the cars did not suffer all that much.

I concur with Barry. I hope you don't want this jack to actually use?  One of the most dangerous things I have come across.

If you look at the owners manual there are to elements to the jack, first the rim jack, second the jack stand that holds the car up. Bot are needed, either make for a safe process.

The Johnny

I think I have the jack and jack stand for one of these.

John,
I would be interested in purchasing the jack and stand for the 41 if it happens to be for sale.
Thanks,

Hi Barry,

I'm really impressed to know someone who has actually used one of those rim jacks.  One of the '41s I owned had a different replacement jack, and the other had one with a big bumper hook welded to the sliding mechanism.  I did some hare-brained things with my '41s when I was in high school and college, but don't think I would have been brave enough to try picking up one of them by the wheel rim (or to have trusted the jack to hold the car up while I reached underneath to position that stand).  Especially after one of my rear rims split all by itself one day, near the spot where the jack would hook on. Ah, the adventures of youth!

Happy New Year!

I read on p . 40 of the MPB( april 53), states that all 41-53 cadillacs except CC, comes with a bumper jack.  CC 41-48 comes with screw jack, 49 up comes with sill jack. Only  mention of a rim jack is the handle, Group 3.0489, P/N 3509170. Maybe my book is too new? Dave

Dave,
Take a look at a 41 owners manual. It shows some clear pictures.

My MPB book shows the rim jack was just in 1941 Dave. Could be they were fazed out from later books as it was a bad idea?  My 41 manual is a repro and the picture of the jack is not clear to post here.

Its in group 3.0488. Part number " Not Available" so that tells us something.

The best Cadillac jack I have ever used is the articulated one used for the 1961 Cadillac. It wasn't in the trunk when I sold the car.

Chris, maybe this jack was the reason that so many RH 1941 skirts were left in the ditch when they were newer. I assume that the jack was invented so that the bumpers would not get scarred.

I have TWO Cadillac jacks to give away (you pick up or pay packing and transport). I'm in Columbia, SC.
I believe the older one is from 1941-42 (was a spare for my 1942-7519F).
I believe the other one is from 1964 (again a spare for my 1964-60S).
I do NOT have the lug wrenches, just the floor stand, the column and the "claws".
PM me if you need/want photos.

Yann,

I was confused today. I would just like the one for the early Cadillac not the later one.

Chat with you later.

John, I too am confused. I just looked at (and photographed) the TWO jacks. Now I'm not sure which is which. They look IDENTICAL to me, but for the swivel hooks (as you will see in the attached pics).

I also looked at my 1950 MPB (Master Parts Book) covering some parts from 1935 thru 1966). I note that the jacks do have their own part numbers. Most units consist of the "base", the "jack" and the "swivel hook".  What is not clear is the physical difference (if any) between them. "Handles" were ordered  separately.

Rather than send you the WRONG jack, pls look at the pics, ask around and tell me which one of them (if any) is suitable for your car.

Cheers.

None of these are for 1941. It has a triangular shaped lug that "fits" in the outer rim of the wheel. The ones shown are "bumper" jacks.

While the Jacks are not for the earlier cars the bottom one (picture 257.97) is the one I would like to have.

John: Please PM me to confirm that you want BOTH these jacks: yalestaid [at] gmail [dot] com. These are heavy SOBs and I am currently recovering from shoulder surgery. I don't want to be chasing the proverbial "wild goose".
