How do they do things like this?  I will never know.....anyhow, can anyone guide me on the best way to get this back where it belong?  I was considering JB WELD as a solution but thought I would reach out to the experts before I made any catastrophic mistakes.  My car is about a 3+, a driver, but I would still like the integrity of the components to remain intact and matching.  Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

How the hell does a mechanic do that???

If you have the pieces, you can try backing it with heavy tape or epoxy it to a plastic backing.

Assuming one has the missing pieces, I would go 1-of-2 ways.  First I would investigate using double-sided tape.  While it should work, the tag may stick out from the door jamb a bit?

Second would be spray on contact cement.  I  would clean and spray both surfaces, let them sit for the recommended time period and than place in the desired location.

Once installed, holding screws may be installed; if they were there originally.

OK, bad news is the missing pieces are just that, missing.... the screws are still in the door jamb.  The only way I can think of that he did it was when climbing in to the back seat his jeans caught on it or something.

Please let me know what you think.  I guess I could find find some white plastic and epoxy it back onto that then screw that back into the door jamb?  So, without the missing pieces, I am still, looking for guidance.

Have you tried AG Backeast  http://www.datatags.com/ ? He makes replacement tags.  Also, your local stamp and seal store can also most likely help you.

It looks very similar to the plastic dash faces in my 37 car. mine were all burnt up so a local plastic sign makers reproduced them easily.

Engraving will cut into the plastic.  The factory printed on the plastic with some type of indelible ink.

It's not really the actual way to ID the car, they refer to it as the service tag.

I'd like to find out if one can be sent somewhere to be printed.

The sign people that made my dash faces did it digitally and printed the numerals. They were undistinguishable from the originals.

I purchased a blank repro years ago for my '61 and had a company do a rubber stamp with the vin using pretty correct font style. However, I have yet to look into getting the correct ink to stamping the vin.....

The repro looks real close to the original.  If the goal is to keep the original tag mounted for posterity, buy the repro and glue your original on top if it.  If it all lines up, original will be retained and repro will fill-in for the missing pieces.  You could even sand down the original, or the matching area of the repro, to make a smoother match.

Or buy two repros.  Glue original to one and exacto out the missing parts of the other and then glue them on.  It will be thicker but a reasonable facsimile.

John,
What car is this for - I may have missed it.
However, The format of those tags have changed over time.
You would think that the 59 and 60 tags were the same - because the cars are so similar - but they were not - see pics.
If you find a gr8 place, let us know.
Have fun,

I have a machine that was made to stamp serial number on a metal plate.  But I don’t think it would work well in this case.  It looks to me that the dies that stamped the numbers were heated to melt into the plastic a little bit.  Then black paint was wiped in the lettering.  That is only the serial number, the lines, logo and common lettering look to me like they were printed on.
