I changed my valve cover gaskets and noticed some thick sludge on heads. Might be from car sitting. So I decided to do an oil/filter change with 4qts 10w30 and one Qt marvel mystery oil. The motor developed a ticking sound like valve lash is off. Am I better off now that inside motor is now clean to change oil and use a 10W 40? Or heavier?
Car just hit 42,000 original miles.
Thanks

What may have happened is that the Marvel dislodged a few specs of crud that
are causing that lifter noise.  I don't think it's anything to worry about.

Marvel is a great solvent and that's what can happen.  I would just run it for awhile,
let it do it's job then change that oil and filter again.  The lifter noise will likely
subside even before you do the change.

Whether you use 10W30 or 10W40 doesn't make much of a difference.  Since
we're heading into Spring / Summer you may wish to use 10W40.

I'm sure people will chime in on this one but looks like I got here first.
If there us sludge up top, there is sludge elsewhere too. You need to be concerned about chunks of sludge breaking off and blocking oil passages.
Logically thinner oil that gets up to full operating temperature will keep the crap flowing. Change the oil and filter very often until it is clean.
Pull the valve covers off in a few hundred miles and be sure there are no loose chunks in the top.

That's what I was intending to do. Just don't like the new ticking noise since I di the MMO with 10w30
Thanks
