I installed my hood on the 1941 Cadillac series 62 and the hood springs do not hold the hood up. My question is,"Does the spring pair  belong at the bottom or at the top near the hood hinge?". I placed the spring pair at the bottom. I had changed out my hood brace as it was worn out. The hood always remained open without help as it was designed to do but now it will not remain up. Thanks, Chet 25441

I think the springs would foul up the hood mechanism if they were on the top.  I have the same situation on both my cars. Took off the braces and lubricated everything and both hoods no longer stay right up. Guess they were made to be a bit tight?

Steve thank you. I had placed the springs to the bottom so I guess I will make a prop to hold hood up when needed. Chet 25441

Chet: Had the same problem with my 47. After lubricating the hinges, the hood would not stay up. So for the next 15 years I had to use a hood prop. When I decided to restore the car I said enough is enough with the hood and sent the hinges to SMS Auto Restoration Services. Picture below is the 47 in restoration after SMS rebuilt the hinges. http://www.sms-auto.com/default.html  Restoration was 10 years ago and hood still stays up like a new car.   Bill

I replaced the ones on a '41 60S from All Cads, they were so bad you could lift them off by hand. Put the new ones on using an engine hoist with a pulley and cable arrangement anchored to the frame. Just be careful doing the job.

Matt, the photos show different springs than those I have. Mine attach at the hinge and again at the bottom of car frame. Thanks for the view. Chet 25441

Ok, wasn't sure if they'd help, 62 vs. 60S
