On my 57 the neg from battery attaches to the frame, is that OK or should it go to the engine block. I also have a braided ground from engine to firewall,,,,correct??

Correct.  There should be two braided straps from the had to cowl and another strap from the starter to frame.

In a nutshell, you should be able to trace short, heavy conductors
directly from the battery neg to the engine block.  Bruce Roe
