I have two '59-62 air conditioning fan blower wheels that are out of balance.  Can anyone suggest a source for getting them balanced?  They are metal.  I have been unsuccessful finding new ones of the same size, metal or plastic, that are already balanced.  Many thanks in advance for your help!

One way would be to create a centre shaft that is sufficiently long enough so you can support each end on a pair of roller bearings at each end, to replicate a pair of "V" blocks.

Spin the fan and let it settle with the heaviest side settling at the bottom.

Then, with a pair of tin snips, and a piece of thin panel steel, cut a piece about 3/4" x 1/2", and fold it in half, and then with a pair of pliers, clamp it to one of the blades at the top.   This will add weight to the lightest side, but you must clamp each piece, as it might take more than one, from the inside, so centrifugal force won't spin it off.

If it needs a lighter weight, then make up one not as wide.

A bit of trial and error and you should be right to cool.

Once the correct weight has been attained, then simply glue the weight in position, so it cannot move.

There are clips on some of my fans; put there by the manufacturer for
balance.  A little time in the junk yard could probably find a few.

I have balanced fans by just powering them and adjusting clips.  Try a
clip around the edge till a best spot is found.  Now put a pair of clips
about 1/8 turn away, on each side, remove the center clip. This should
have roughly the same effect.  Now move this pair of clips together or
apart to increase or diminish their effect, for best results.  Try moving
one or the other a bit for more improvement.  good luck, Bruce Roe
