1937 LaSalle Transmission

I have a 1937 LaSalle Transmission - would it be fair to say that these transmissions are in fact "leak free" when assembled / sealed "properly"? ... or are they known to leak no matter what you do?

These old transmissions are never sealed completely. If you replace the rear seal with a modern type it would help but mine actually splashes a little oil over time out the top where the gear change fits. No seal there anyway. I think it was more excepted in the day.

Thanks Steve - I've got the more modern tail shaft seal solved as well as the top shift lever solved -  All the seals / shaft o rings were replaced and the transmission face-to-bellhousing is in place as well. I think it is up front with the Archimedes screw affair on the input shaft is where some residual oil comes out after I park.

There's a drain hole for excess oil in the lower part of the front for this input shaft/ bearing sleeve. I have seen where people make gaskets and seal part of this hole up causing oil to flow forward and drip out the front end.
