I see many Hydramatic filler tubes have an o-ring. I bought one for my 1960 but am not sure it needs one.

None listed for the tube install the service manual.

The part I recv'd shows 1956-1969. The tube has no groove for it so, unless it lays down in the hole...

Of course I forgot about this till after I installed the engine.

Yes, there is an o-ring. That seal is located into a groove from the transmission case, the tube just slip into it.

Is it more of a square ring than round?    Hydramatic seemed to like those some years and locations.  If that was what the original was round ones never seem to quite work.

Paul,
Here is a close up of my 59 trans filler pipe with a flanged tube and round - not square - "O" ring.
The trans between 59 and 60 are supposed to be about the same - except smaller body in the 60.
Hope this helps, but I can't say for sure about the 60.
Have fun,

It's the same o-ring for 1960. Indeed, from 1956 to the last 1964 Hydramatic, the seal is the same. (I don't know for other transmissions, I'm only dealing with the "Jetaway" ones.

Roger, you say the ring is installed in the case. One of the pictures show it just on the tube. So that’s not the way to do it?

The o-ring is in the case. However, I did a "repair" for a leak a long time ago by inserting the same o-ring on the tube. With the pressure of the tube against the case, the oil leak was cured. This is however not the right way.  On older transmissions (you have a '55 car), I don't know how the tube is sealed.

I have installed a 62 engine and transmission. I just got a picture of a 59 transmission showing the Oâ€"ring. The 62 case is a bit different, but should have a similar ring. It is listed in the parts book. I will have to look if it is still in position and intact.

If the o-ring has a certain age, replace it, otherwise you will have an oil leak. Have a look also at the tube, it must be perfectly round and the surface undamaged.
