Transmission making clunking noise when shifting from reverse to drive.Could it be the u joints?

Sure.

Could also be a bad center carrier bearing, loose exhaust, bad trans mount or bad engine mounts.

Lots of stuff to check.

How high is the idle on the car?

I have had the same issue lately. I was also thinking my idle was too high after the car was warmed up.

So I finally got off my butt and cleaned the carb and linkage and noticed the fast idle cam was not rotating to knock it off fast idle.

I cleaned it up a bit and guess what 99% of the clunk is gone.

So try the simple stuff first and check the idle.

Wonder if I need to adjust the fast idle screw, I will notice how she idles from cold next time.
