Anyone know where to obtain or the correct dimensions of the hex head flange bolts for counterweights on a flathead crankshaft. I'm talking about later the Hex head type, not the pre-war slotted heads. Asking for a friend.

If those are just regular flange bolts you may try Bolt Depot www.boltdepot.com or any other good quality local hardware store.

A little difficult at 3000 to 6000 miles. I was hoping someone would have the dimensions for ordering. I do not have one removed at present.

Steve,
Hi. I have 2 cranks out. Shoot me an E-mail with specifics of what you need.

Steve,

I find it interesting that I can't find those bolts listed in my master parts list book. So I don't know if they changed any of the bolts dimensions when they changed the head configuration but I can give you the dimensions for the earlier bolts and I can tell you that they are not standard size.  The OEM bolt is 5/8" - 18 thread and 3.323" long.  I could not find a direct replacement and ended up following Paul Phillips suggestion of using a standard socket head cap screw 3.5" long.  I had to open up the countersink in the counterweights slightly to accommodate the wider socket head but the crankshaft has extra thread depth to engage the added bolt length.  So if the length and diameter of the later OEM bolts are the same as the 38 to 41 bolts you might consider the socket head cap screw.

I found the same thing in the MPB Tom. I have come to the conclusion that the factory only supplied the crank as a complete unit, and never intended the weights to be removed. I guess the logistics of re-building one of these motors was not one of their concerns?

I have a friend who started rebuilding one of these years ago and had to drill out the earlier slotted type and wants to replace with the later type hex head. This changeover seems to have happened during the war years. My friend has a 1942 Cadillac and his engine still has the slotted type.  My tank engine has the hex heads.

Shot you a mail Bobby.
