My gasket set came with exhaust manifold gaskets for my 1956 365.  I've heard mixed things, some say use them some say don't.   I'm leaning towards using them, question is, do I need to use any sealant other than anticipated sieze on my bolts?  Thanks

G'day Rob,

The Gaskets are supplied because by the time an engine requires rebuilding, the Exhaust Manifold surfaces are no longer perfectly straight.

The Factory didn't use gaskets so that the manifolds could slip and slide as they expanded and contracted during the operating temperatures.

As for a sealant, this is not necessary, simply because of the above-mentioned slipping and sliding.

Ant, as for Anti-seize compounds on the threads, certainly use it.

I forgot to mention that one thing people often overlook is the Manifolds have at least one bolt hole that is the correct size for the bolt, and the rest are oversize.   This is to allow for the "movement"

The normal hole holes it in the correct position whilst the rest clamp it to the head.

Bruce,

I respectfully disagree.

Don't be too rude with yourself: you don't have the same experience with Cads from the fifties as other people!
