Sombrero hubcaps from 1947 to 1950 all look the same on the outside, but are the backsides all the same?   I seem to remember there were 2 types - where the attaching ring on the backside was deeper some years than others, and if you used the wrong year hubcap on the wrong year rim the hubcap would fall off.  Can anyone shed some light on this?

If I'm not mistaken, I think 48 to 52 sombreros are the same.  47 is differerent.

In 1948 the 820 x15 tire was used which required a new size wheel which also required the retaing ring of the sombrero to be wider. This new sombrero was the same 48-52.The 47 sombrero was one year only. A 47 sombrero has only 1 drain hole in the ring while the 48-52 has 2 drain holes. Those 2 holes can be next to each other or 180 degrees apart. The 48-52 sombrero can be run on a 41-47 wheel but will stick out from the rim about 3/8 inch. The 41 -47 caps should never be used on the 48-52 wheel as the cap will come off and can take with it, the fender skirt.  Bill
