I think I know the answer, but the body manual was inconclusive.

The reading lights in the sail panel: are they supposed to work with the switch regardless if the engine is off or on. The lights go on when a door is open. With the doors closed they won't go on using the switch. Can I assume both switches need to be replaced? I can do that when the panels come off for the new headliner work. Assuming this a standard SPST switch, just like in a guitar. Is there any other work/mntx I should do to the lights while the panels are off?

Always grateful for the information and opinion here.

Hi Laurie:

For some years, the reading lights in the sail panel
will only go "on" if the headlamp switch is also on
in the parking lamp position.

This may be the issue -- worth a try.

Mike, you da man, that's exactly what it was.
Switches are grundgy feeling, not great contact. I'll try a douche of DeOxit carefully over the upholstery.
If that doesn't do the trick I'll replace them when the panels comes off.
Graci!

That is good engineering.  My kids were always leaving the interior lights on in our 1996 and 2007 Suburban.  For a decade my nightly routine was to turn them all off after my children went to bed.  In this 1970 Cadillac Fleetwood when the lights went off those reading lights went off too, and so no waking up to a dead battery if a careless passenger left a light on, provided the headlights were off.

And the DeOxit douche worked PERFECTLY.
A light spray into the right side of the switch, worked back and forth numerous times, a spray into the left side
of the switch, worked back and forth numerous times. Repeated about 3 times for each switch, now they're like silk. Switches feel brand new and work nominally, video on my Facebook page tonight.
So pleased.
