On the 54 and 55 models, there is a sheet metal cap that is screwed onto the top of the grille.  Actually, there are two pieces, a left and a right.  They are painted black and held on with Philips head screws.

Does anyone know for certain whether these are supposed to be gloss black or are they supposed to be semi-gloss black?

Yes, +1 on the semi gloss black -- that is correct.

I have always thought it was semi-gloss.  But somewhere in the back of my mind I had some doubts.  I may have seen it in gloss before, but that may have been someone's attempt at a restoration...
