All works blows ice cold, I get heat and heater core is hot. Thernostat is fine coolant flows fine. Car does not overheat.

But when I ask for heat and dial the thing up to 85 it better be real cold out then I get OK heat but not real hot.

Seems the sensitivity of the temp sensor errs on the cool end. So the call for heat seems to be harder than getting the AC to blow cold.

Its like the dial needs some calibration to sense it is colder inside the car then to deliver more heat. Could the sensor under the dash grill be off?

Is this possible?

No vacuum leaks as far as I can tell, blower works.

The car has always been like this as long as I have owned it. About 5 1/2 years so this is nothing new.

IF you get full summertime cooling AND you do get full heating when the outside and the inside temperatures get very cold then you might possibly have a temperature control dial out of calibration.  There is a very good section in the factory shop manual on how to adjust this device on page 1-28.
There are a couple of other possible problems but I might suggest trying to apply full engine vacuum (or preferable vacuum from hand held vacuum pump) to the power servo nipple and driving the system into full heat. If you get sufficient heat from the system t indicates that the fault does indeed lie with the controls and checking the temperature selector calibration would be my next stem.

I do get full cooling in the summer and it has to be cold, say under 45-50 to get reasonable heat. I think when its 30 or so I may get full heat but I think it could be hotter. However very rarely do I use the car in weather that cold.

Thanks.

I would check the full vacuum to the power servo next and see what kind of heat you get.
