Well, we finished the Lemons Rally yesterday. My 1940 LaSalle hearse made it all the way from Tucson AZ to Chicago, then to Los Angeles via Route 66 with a side trip to Vegas and a few circles and mountain roads thrown in for fun. In all, about 6000 miles of travel.

The most noticeable failure was the exhaust crossover gaskets blowing out after a couple thousand miles. We used a set of Best gaskets when overhauling the motor. However, I didn't retorque them until it was too late.

Is this the best gasket out there, or is the Remtech graphite gasket better? I'd appreciate replies from people who have experience with these, and have put some miles on their engines lately.

There are many threads on this forum on this subject. 99% of the time its caused by the metal of the block eroding just where the manifold sits on it so no gasket compression at this point.  To have the top of the block skimmed is the 100% answer but others have built up the area with some success using epoxies, but for how long is anyone's guess.

I have had the Best copper gasket fail very rapidly (1000 miles) even with a newly machined block and manifold.  The black fiber one they sell last longer at about 7000 miles on one example.  They probably get very few complaints because no one drives them that far.

I used remflex  on my 41, previous leak really distorted crossover area. In fact I sent them my old gaskets they used as a pattern.  I have a extra set $20.00 plus shipping.
