hello !

I have removed the original carpet from my 69 limo and it needs cleaning - has some minor stains - don't know what it is ?

You tubing it suggests using heavy duty engine degreaser ……

I wonder about this if it may be too powerful??

then hot water and soap / srub - sponge out with water - which should be pretty harmless ??

your thought please good people

Soaking the carpet and getting the underlay wet is
not a good idea.

You need a foam type cleaner that lifts the dirt and
stains out and has good chemical cleaning action.

I've had good luck a product called "Tuff Stuff":

Engine degreaser may leave a stinky residue.
I have had excellent results with Resolve carpet cleaner.
It cleans very well and has a nice smell.

Murrya,
I'd give Spot Shot a try in a inconspicuous area and then use it on the worst spots.
Consider Oxy-Clean, a nylon brush, cloth and a Shop Vac to extract the small areas done while working your way around the whole piece.
Good luck!!

Dish soap scrubbed in, pressure washed and set in the sun to thoroughly dry. Same way you clean your house rugs!

X2 on the "Tuff Stuff".
Vacuum well, apply Tuff Stuff, let it sit for a bit.
Damp sponge rub on any stains, let dry, vacuum.

I have washed numerous auto carpets. I prefer removing as you have already done. I might also peel off jute padding if it is not glued too severely. It won’t hurt to get wet but It adds to dry time and weight.

Yours is a synthetic fiber. Depending on soil level, I use dawn or similar. I have also used powdered laundry soap. Wet soak the carpet first and start introducing soap. Only A garden hose is needed. Scrub throughly with a brush. I then hang it folded on a line or fence and rinse, rinse, rinse. Remaining stains I’ve use a lye based spray cleaner like ‘castrol Super clean’. I’ve never had issue with color fastness, but always good to test on a portion under seat. More rinsing.

I have diluted fabric softener, as a final rinse...after removing all soaps.

Allow to dry completely.

I have achieved OUTSTANDING results with an invigorated appearing finish and feel.

At the recommendation of a few professional detailers, I use Folex for stains.  Spray on, agitate with a brush, and then clean with a normal upholstery shampoo and an extractor.  I have a Bissell Auto Heat extractor - best $250.00 I spent.  Shampoo all my vehicle carpets in the daily drivers once or twice a year.

I use hot water mixed with laundry detergent.  Dunk a towel in the bucket, scrub carpet, vacuum.
