I tried to get at the speedometer to remove it for repair from behind the dash, and was able to remove two of the screws before my back said no more. I'm too big and too old. I'm assuming the dash needs to be removed to get at the speedo?

It will come out without removing the dash, there are 4 bolts holding it in,2 on the top and 2 on the bottom side,.It is not getting it out that is the most fun, wait until you try and put it back in,then the fun begins,as me how i know. :P Good Luck  Harveyb

Mr  Anthenien, I was thinking about you today when I was under the dash of my '41 hooking the power feed for the turn signals to the gas gauge. It wasn't too bad getting into position but trying to figure out how to get out was a challenge to a taller, older guy. Fortunately I had all the right tools, etc. Some time the braille method works if you can be sure you are on the right connection.       Harry

I agree with Harvey B, replacing the speedo will be the trick. Lots of wires back there, many more than the '38 Buicks I had.
