It’s been so rainy and gloomy around here that I have not had a chance to really take the 70 Eldo out for a run or to a show.

Today there was a small show, more like a cruise in at a local restaurant with a very large parking lot. The sun was shining and it was in the low 70’s, just a perfect day.

Here’s a photo of the car parked at the show.

It really felt good to be out in the sun today.

Thank you for the compliments.  I bought this car about 18 months ago from a fellow CLC member.  He bought the car new and it only has 15,600 miles on it.  He ordered it with white bucket seats and a console.  The dealer gave him a hard time saying that buckets can only be ordered in black but he kept insisting and they did build the car with white leather buckets.  It took about 8 years of convincing but I was finally able to buy the car when the original owner felt like he was getting too old to take the car to shows.  I think he's in is mid 80's at this point.

It's a special car and I am lucky to have it.

I’ll have to ok at the cowl tag. I need the plastic spaced for the door mirror.

Have not had time to try to make one.

Beautiful machine! I had mine out once so far this year, the weather is not cooperating at all.

I do have two questions for anyone who may know:

Is the body side molding a factory option?

Is there a source for this?

I was able to address a concern I had with the black rubber insert, but was wondering if the repair didn't work, would I be able to replace it?

Thanks

Brain,
I checked my 70 Data Book last night. Black was the only color offered. Your car has to be an SO!! Cool!!

I guess that's why they gave him a hard time.  I need to check the firewall plate.  They did a lousy job of masking on it so it's got a diagonal line of black paint on it.

I'll have to snap a photo of the plate to see what it says.

The tires are Coker's.  Bias ply and probably 10-12 years old.  Definitely a different feel from my 70 DeVille with the Diamondback radials.

I don't think this car will be getting many highway miles so I will run these tires for a while.

Brian,

Meant to ask you about the 500 high compression engine.  I have driven a 68, 72, 74, and 76 Eldorado, but never a 70 with the 400hp engine, the most powerful Cadillac ever made really until maybe the mid to later 1990's (gross vs. net I know, but still true).  Plus you own a 1970 DVC, and both of your 1970 Cadillacs are in mechanically good shape.

Does the 1970 Eldorado feel noticeably more powerful than the 1970 DVC?, only about a 7% power difference but is it obvious?

I find that the mechanical condition is the main factor in most aspects of driving enjoyment of 40 plus year old Cadillacs, rather then the factory specs.  I think the 1974 Cadillac Eldorado seemed the fastest of the ones I have driven, but the 1968 should be quicker.  This is due to mechanical condition.

That looks A LOT like the '70 I used to have.  Great looking car.

Scot,

I need to check a few things on the car. It starts and runs great but from knowing the original owner I doubt that the secondaries on the carb were ever open.  Not kidding.
When I had the car out on Saturday I had a few opportunities to drive it with some foot into it and the car bucks a bit under full throttle acceleration. It has the original date coded wires on it. Dated 4Q69. Possible has the original plugs in it too. Remember it’s an untouched 15,600 mile car.

I need to check the timing and dwell and determine if the mechanical
and vacuum advance are working. I think a new set of plugs is needed for sure.
Maybe some aggressive carb cleaner and check the air filter too.

Then I’ll know if the 400 horses are all there.  As it is right now I’d have to say that my 70 DeVille, which I have tuned up personally, runs much better.

I’ll let you know once I get some time to play with the car.  It starts and runs and drives beautifully but there is a lot more power hiding somewhere.

Brian,

I had to rebuild the carb on my original 32k mile 1970 DVC.  Oddly, the carb needed to be re-bushed too (made throttle stick)!   the It too had original plugs and wires.  It had all the original vacuum hoses and several vacuum actuators were bad (vacuum break on carb, distributor advance and etc.).  After the vacuum hoses were replaced, the idle increased dramatically and had to be set lower.  I replaced the timing chain, which was fine, but plan to keep her a while.  It runs very well, and it is all original/stock.  Now the car has 39k miles and it will turn past 40k this season.

My 1970 red DVC is a 130k miles restored car, restored at about 90k, and so I consume it regularly.  Added an MTS modified intake manifold (it looks stock, guts are machined different), dual exhaust that look factory, and electronic ignition.  It is faster than the SDV and sounds better, but the SDV is quieter.
