Hello,

Does anyone know what fluid is best for a 1960 Hydromatic? I have an assembly manual but the local parts store does not have any information to translate the AQ ATF to a modern fluid.

Please let me know what you recommend.

Thank You,
John

I am at the point of a first fill myself.

Leaning toward Valvoline Dex/Merc.

Appears it is formulated to the old Dex III standard. Available in big juggs cheap and everywhere.

AC Delco Dex III i think is all all NOS now and pricey.

If the "F" type is the same as used in Fords, then don't bother, unless you want to be rebuilding the transmission soon.

Cheap is not always good.

According to Valvoline, one manufacturer of Type F fluid ---
"Approved for 1980 and earlier Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles
Approved for use in Mazda, Saab, Toyota, Volvo and other Japanese and European vehicles requiring a Type F fluid"

I wouldn't put it in any GM transmission.  Dex/Merc is what you want.

Last few years I've used Dex 6 in my 59.   Works great.
