Marco, "Help" relative to a 1982 Eldo can take many forms, most often concerning the 4100 engine. Can you tell us what you need help about?

And may I congratulate you on your diction and whatever in what I surmise is not your first language.

Thanks a lot also for compliments! I have absolutely to better perform in my English but I am used to study in UK hopefully approaching to the end of my MBA journey and change the course of my professional life... But I don't want to bother you!!

Yes I need a totally new engine. If someone has a 4.100 to sell please contact me as soon as possible.

Many thanks

Marco,

That is a beautiful car (familiar with the model), but how about a few pictures of the exterior.

Truth is the 4100 engine is the weak part of that car.  If you want to keep it authentic, replace it with a 4100 and read up on all that is required to upkeep it, such as but not by any means limited to tablets in the coolant to prohibit a head gasket leak.  If you want to enjoy driving it (more power) and not concerned with strict authenticity, best to replace the engine with a better one, which is entirely possible, but more expensive than a drop in replacement 4100.  The 1979, 1980, or the 1981 (V-8, 6, 4) Cadillac engines are much better performers (not lightening fast though).  There are some difficult interfaces to deal with if you go this way, such as climate control, dash computers and the like.  The basic size and spatial compatibility are no issue.

It is suggested you find another 4100 powered Cadillac with this body style (1982, 1983, 1984, or 1985) and ask to drive it and see if you are happy with the experience.  If so replace with 4100, if not and authenticity is not crucial and neither are funds, go for a nicer power upgrade.

Either way, enjoy your Cadillac!

Do not buy a "good, used" 4100 engine!  For the most part, there is no such thing.
Buy one that has been overhauled by a reputable rebuilder.  Jasper engines used to rebuild them but I do not think they do anymore.  Frankly, even rebuilding them is a crapshoot, they were a bad engine from the beginning.  As Scot mentioned, if you get a rebuilt one, follow the factory recommendations for servicing and the coolant pellets to the letter.  I fear that having one of those engines in Italy is going to make things very difficult for you.

I see black clouds for Marco…
Scot, is a 4.5 Liter not a better alternative?

Anything would be better than the HT4100.   Didn't Cadillac make a 4.9 after the 4.5?

I agree Bruce! Yes, there was a 4.9 after the 4.5. I used to drive a Sedan de Ville as a company car with the 4.5, it was a very pleasant car. I don't remember that I drove a 4.9.

Many thanks my dear Colleagues!!
I love this forum!!

Unfortunately I prefer to maintain its complete originality.
If you hear about a 4.1 liters to sell I'll buy immediately.

Grazie mille

Dear Marco,

I love those wonderfully designed Cadillac years, bellissimo!-- and I, too, have suffered through the agony of the 4100 failures.  In my 85 Biarritz convertible, I replaced the original 4100, with two used engines.  They lasted for 30-40,000 each, before developing serious mechanical difficulties.  I had one 4100 in my 83 Eldorado that lasted over 300,000 miles--- I have some ideas about how to baby them, but that's another long email to you.  I was able to get my two used 4100 engine from Action Auto Recycling on Long Island, New York... now that was about eight years ago, and well before I had my 85 convertible changed over to an Oldsmobile small block--- a costly and relatively complex operation.  James

I think somebody was offering a rebuilt engine with 4.5 internals, in a 4.1 block.   I have no idea if you can still get it or reliability.  It would look hundred percent authentic.

Scot Minesinger

When you get the 4.1 engine installed and mechanically reliable and good repair, please do not judge American car performance based on this engine.

A mechanic friend recommends Jasper Engines. He also recommends using an 83 or 84 motor, NOT an 82.
Good Luck.

I checked with Jasper Engines and they do still offer rebuilt HT4100s.

Again, I would be extremely hesitant about using any used (not rebuilt) HT4100 engine, just throwing good money after bad.  Even using a rebuilt one is a risk in my opinion.

I have to say, many Olds small block V8s were used in the 79-85 Toro/Riv/Eldo
series, absolutely bullet proof.  Performance too, my 79 E has a 403.  Here
I read of a very successful project, an Olds being substituted for a 4.1.
good luck, Bruce Roe

Marco, if you don't get a reply, please send me a note. They are an Indiana firm and I'll call them and tell them that you have the means, etc, etc, etc, to handle the transaction, even overseas. (At least you can find out the cost and then decide what to do.) Best, Barry.

To save a little time and aggravation, have the VIN number ready to give them, they will ask for it.
