Within the last year I have replaced both rear seals only to have the following symptoms return:
1. Back of the tire looks stained as the rubber is darker black near the rim. NOTE-all wheel cylinders are new & not leaking.
2.The brake shoes are fouled with a greasy residue--seems more heavy than gear oil.
3. There is no gear oil oil running down inside the backing plate
4. I checked the axle vent, probed with a wire & it seems clear-As is the drain hole from the rear backing to
inside front area of the axle bearing
5. These may be the original bearings or if I did change them it was 30 yrs ago
6. Pictured is the inside of the drum--looks like fluid/grease flung from center outward.
Is it possible the greasy residue is from a failing axle bearing? and not the seal? I get NO bearing noise like a growl, rubbing or grinding but besides that--Are there other symptoms of a bad axle bearing?. There is small amount of grease on the face of the bearing.  Thanks very much  frank pezzimenti

There's a drain hole at the bottom of the bearing retainer to drain out any oil that gets past the seal before it reaches your linings.  Perhaps its blocked?
