I want to change the tranny fluid in the 29 Roadster..

The old shop manual says use A-200 lube..

What does that translate to in today's weights?.......85W-90W??

Thanks for any help...

Mike

Hi Mike:

The 80-W90 types were being phased in much later
than your 1929 car (mid 30's)  Your transmission
needed what was called a "Mobile 600 Lube" which
was thick and sticky lube.  The modern oils are too thin.

Here are a few sites to give you more information:
https://forums.aaca.org/topic/25135-600w-gear-oil/
http://modelafordclub.co.nz/wp-content/uploads/Just-what-is-600W-Oil.pdf

Engines by the mid 30's could use the more modern
oils but for your tranny you need these.  They are
still available.

Hope this helps,

I put the new cone spring in today, that I got from Pete Sanders.....

Then put 2 1/2 quarts of the mobil 600 into the transmission...

The shifting up and down the gears is noticeably better....even the old synchro's are working much better....

Yes thank you Mike & Harry for the info....

Now I have to figure out how to pump this heavy lube out of the 5 gallon pail and into other transmissions and rear axles fill plugs....this tranny was easy I had the shifter cover off so i just poured it into the trans....

Somebody must make a hand pump to make it easy to fill thru the filler plugs on other rear ends and trannys....

I used one from Harbor Freight with a hand pump. It worked OK but was slow due to the thickness of the lube and hard on the arm.     Harry

Mike:

What you need is a hand held lube gun like this.
They were used for that purpose in the 20's.  I don't
know who still makes these but the photo is from
the Ford Model T site:

Thanks guys....I'm going to take shot at the NAPA hand pump...

For 9 bucks I'll give it a try..... I can't imagine it will last long before leaking from both ends.....

I'll report back with results....

I picked up that hand pump today at NAPA...looks ok...$9.56...inexpensive....

I put the bucket of lube out in the sun for an hour then tried the pump...

It pulled lube out of the pail....I didn't check to see if it pulled a full pint like it said on the box.....but it seems to work....It will be easier to then inject lube into the trans or rear ends..

Thumbs up so far....
