1955 Transmission Kick Down Linkage

Hello!
I have a 1955 CDV that had the stock 4bbl Intake Manifold and carbs.  I have had it changed to the Eldorado Performance Package Intake and 2 Edelbrock Carbs.  The shop that has done the work has not been able to get the transmission to shift into passing gear or even downshift at low speeds.  Someone "hinted" that there may be a difference in the linkage for the 2 4bbl carbs.  Any ideas on how to solve this?\

Yes. They were different. Not sure what the difference was however. It is 12.2010 on the attachment. You could have bought one for $3.10 in 1955. May be a bit more now though.

Hello Larry,

As Jeff's post indicated, two different throttle valve rods were used because the locations of the carburetors are different, relative to the fore/aft location of the carbs on the manifold, between the single carb and dual carb models.

Since you have Edelbrock carburetors, it could be that even if you obtained an original dual carb rod, it might not work.

Your shop could use the rod from your original set-up as a model, and they could fabricate a rod for the Edelbrock set-up, provided the Edelbrock cars have a provision for attaching a Throttle Valve rod.  The throttle valve in the transmission does not require much linear movement for its operation, so if the shop does fabricate a rod, a fine thread should be used at the adjustment points.

Deviating from a stock set-up often requires some creativity to get all the parts to work together properly.  This is classic hot-rod stuff.  If the shop cannot figure out how to do this, you might want to find another shop or change back to the original single carb set-up.  If you have the shop manual for your car, you might want to loan it to the shop so they can get a good understanding of how the Throttle Valve works.
