Have forgotten.  Chassis grease ok for water pump grease fitting?  I have water pump grease for my older cars, but don't have it in a greasegun.  1947 convertible

Hi Tony: Chassis grease can dissolve in water and then your water pump bearing will eventually fail. Also the chassis grease when dissolved will help plug the radiator tubes. Bill

Thank you Bill.  I should probably buy a small grease gun just for that.  OR if one of my grease cups from an older Pierce-Arrow would screw into that fitting thread, I could do that.  It seems that the grease cup would have a larger orifice.  Perhaps not?

I rigged up a grease cup on mine that I got from here: https://www.restorationstuff.com/ecommerce/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=74

The threads were different on my pump so I had to make an adapter from a brass cap from my local ACE Hardware by tapping the top to accommodate the grease cup.

Thank you for that Restoration Supply info. sounds like the best bet.  Which thread size from them should I order?  Does anyone know what the thread size is on the Caddy flat heads?  I just took a Pierce Arrow one, screwed it in and lubricated with that.  Can't believe I don't have an extra one with all the extra stuff I have lying around!

Hi Tony,
Unless you are particular you can get cad plated grease cups from MacmasterCar. and I think they are 1/8 NPT. We use a male flemale 1/8 npt fitting to raise the height.  The grease has to be water pump grease specific to water pumps; looks like beeswax.

Thanks.  I have the grease, for another classic that requires it.  The cheapest way out, is to buy an inexpensive small grease gun, and retain the factory fitting

Correct. Buy the small gun and load it with the Lubriplate water pump grease ONLY! I have different grease guns for different applications. DON'T be tempted to put too much grease in there and pop the seal. Just a few pumps should do it before the Point of No Return....

I've always been warned about too much pressure with a grease gun on the water pump, so I take out the fitting and push Lubriplate in with my finger. Then put the zerk back on.

I bought the following grease cup from them:

FLU040
Grease Cup Machined Brass 9/16" OD - 1/4"-32 Thread

The reason I did so is that I wanted the smallest diameter possible to fit in the space on top of the water pump. It's pretty tight in there. The threads on the pump are 1/8 NPT so that is why I had to make an adapter to piece them together.

I too can vouch for NOT using a grease gun to lube your pump. I was using one of those mini hand operated guns and quite frankly, just couldn't feel the resistance until it was too late and blew the seal on my $200 rebuild. If you will look through my recent posts you will see what type of disaster I have had that began with doing just such a thing.
