HowTo Remove 'Plastic' Heater Control Knob 1937 LaSalle

My heater control has an off while plastic (maybe Bakelite) knob that appears as though it pushes on to the shaft, as there is shaft showing between the knob and the threads above. I've pulled best I can and wonder if a heat gun cautiously used might help break it loose. I sure don't want to snap the knob. I is located on the bottom side of the dash, almost mid-way.
