In regard to the exhaust manifold:

The 1969 service manual Page 6-88 Section 112 paragraph b. Step 3 states:

‘Install new exhaust pipe packing in end of exhaust pipe.’

Is this raw material? Is this a part?

If raw material, is there a spec?

If a part, does anyone have a part number?

I also have read here, that there is no seal between the manifold and the pipe.

Second question:

I have read that the driver’s side manifold is known to crack, where should I look when I pull it?

The root of this is there is a faint tick coming from the driver’s side and sounds like an exhaust leak. I have not been able to pinpoint and will remove the manifold for inspection and reinstallation. If it needs a packing I would like to know before I pull it.

I have loosened all the bolts so no issue with removal.

Isn’t that what I used to call the “donut”? If so, here’s a Chevy example:

My 429 had an exhaust leak between the head and the manifold on the driver’s side. The (good) Cadillac mechanics here in KC pulled the exhaust manifold gasket - bolting the manifold directly to the head - and the problem was solved! Of course, the 472 probably plays by different rules.

Yeah, that’s what I thought, however, I have read here that there is no donut and from looking at it, there does not appear to be a donut.

On my car, there was a conical steel insert between the manifold and the exhaust pipe.  Should have taken a picture.  I suspect it serves a silencing function and maybe a bit of sealing.  There was no other packing.

Thanks again, it was that post over the winter that got me thinking about pulling the manifold and looking for cracks.

Did you replace the conical seal or did you reuse it?

Maybe I will search the interwebz for a “74 Eldorado Exhaust manifold seal’....instead.

I have no idea what they mean by packing.  Further downstream just after the Y the pipe appeared to be double walled so maybe there was some sort of packing there but it looked to be welded in so I don't know how you would have been able to replace it.

The cracks in the linked photo's do look like what I remember seeing on several of these.

Keep in mind '74 may be different from '69.

The conical insert was sheet metal, it was not what one would normally consider a "seal."  It was more like the anti-reversion cones you see in some aftermarket exhaust headers.  It was in good shape and I reused it.  Like TJ said, this may have taken the place of what used to be double walled pipe as my header pipes weren't double walled.

Here's the 67 - 70 Eldorado exhaust illustration from the parts book.

Understood, but I may be interested in looking at it in this case.
A conical seal is the technical term for a ‘cheater seal’...

Thanks, that seems to indicate ‘no seal’ in the stock configuration.

Easy enough, I will disassemble and inspect the flange area and look over the manifold for cracks. The area for cracks highlighted is readily visible and I don’t see anything, but once I get the thing off, I will inspect the entire manifold.
