Hi all. The driver's side power window on our low mileage '59 Sedan Deville has stopped working. I took the switch out and everything looks fine. I'll try to upload a photo.

Is it time to remove the door panel and test the actual motor? The other three windows are working fine.

Thanks.

When you say “looks fine,” did you test the switch by  bypassing it by using a jumper wire to touch the power feed (red wire) to the up or down leads going to the window  motor?

I have had two 1959s passenger doors cut the wires leading to the motor. One on a 39000 mile car the other a 49000 mile car.

Take the wire guard off. It looks like a hinge but is not. Check to see if the wires are not severed. Shine a light inside the fender behind the kick panel.

That may be the issue. The guard can act like a saw and cut the wires.

This happened on the passenger side of my 1959 Cadillac and Oldsmobile.

If this is the case repair it by adding some slack wire in the connection and looping the excess wire away from the leading edge of the wire guard up into the fender area.

A poor design where the wire is too short to stay away from the wire cover.

Faulty/bad relay?  Located behind kick panels too.

Appreciate the replies. I will investigate those suggestions. The switches for the other three windows work fine. I thought perhaps this knowledge would eliminate some possibilities. Like a fuse, or faulty wiring from the switch.

Will update.

Not a bad breaker/fuse if other windows still operate.

If the window can be operated by jumping the wires, the problem is the switch.

My suggestion was to rule out a simple obvious issue. So I would check the wire to your door motor, it passes through that guard as I stated above.

It comes from the switch through that guard into the door so this may be the simple solution. All you need to do is look at it before you go crazy testing this and that.

This happened to me twice on each 1959 I have. In my case the passenger door.  Since it is the drivers door maybe something else but worth a quick look.
