Have people lost their minds thinking by putting so much bs in eBay adds people will actually pay ridiculous prices ? Here’s a perfect example .

I know someone who has 4 NOS '59 Eldorado caps in  the original box that he bought new.  He bought two sets in '62. One went on his '58 SDV the other was a spare. Two years ago he turned down $8M because he feels they are worth north of $10M.

To the best of my knowledge he does not, nor has he ever used recreational pharmaceuticals.....

Nothing surprises me any more.

There was a NOS set at Hershey this year that someone posted on Facebook, still in the original boxes.  Can't remember if the asking price was $12500 or $25000, but I know it was up there.  I'll see if I can find the post.

That these were still available from the dealer in 71/72 is surprising in itself. I wonder how much they cost then... ???

Eric,

According to the '70 MPL they were $56.20 each.....If you bought gold at $35 in 1970, the hub caps were a better investment ; 4450% vs 4280% return.

Guys/Gals like that will catch some sucker to pay all kinds of money for items such as these; no wonder buyers like this end up short of funds at some point of their lives.  EAM

If there ever was a set of $10,000 wheel covers...that would be it.
Last year I sold the Holy Grail of NOS Olds covers in the box for $500 :-\

Turned down $8M (million)?  They are worth $10M (million)?

Did you mean Thousand?  ($8k), $10k)

Chris,

I meant "M" as in the Roman numerial for one thousand which was the norm when I was in college and entered the business world . The use of "K" - as in kilo - came into use in the 70's when we were going to convert to the metric system...… another ingenious government idea.

Up until around 1999 or so you could find them nos in the box for sale and they would usually bring 4000 for a set , then a set went on eBay and a fellow in Australia paid 10k for the set and that has been the benchmark ever since for nos ones .  At the ridiculous claim this seller states in the add  of a restored one being worth 3500 each market value well nos should be worth twice that so that puts the value of a nos set 28k according to the nonsense in this particular eBay add . I hope his  silly claims are correct since I have a nos set in the box sitting right here lol

My favorite of this sort of thing was the used antenna lead (yes, just the wire part with the braided metal covering) for a 49 Cadillac that sold on ebay several years ago for $650.  Yup, $650 for a bit of antenna cable.

Ralph...the caps probably were a better investment than the car they went on(!) - especially after storage costs are factored in. :D

I've got a bridge for sale if anybody wants one!

Mike Josephic CLC #3877

What it all comes down to is how badly you need that part.

If you're finishing up a long and expensive restoration and
you need some "item"  -- such as an expensive piece of
trim or "jewelry" to top it off -- a person may spend much
more than the going rate.  "The going rate", whatever that is,
depends on the quality and rarity of the piece.

For example, about 15 years ago when I was gathering parts
for the restoration of my '55 Eldorado I needed another hood
crest.  I didn't like the repos at the time. Ted Holcombe had
an NOS crest NIB with the gold plated surround for $500.  I
paid it and was glad I did.  It's been on the car ever since!
