69Deville

Hello all,

I am in the process of replacing my evaporator, POA valve, and expansion valve for my 69 Deville. I have a new reproduction expansion valve (not NOS, pic attached) and it doesn't seem to have a screen inside of it. My old original one had a screen and I have a replacement NOS one on hand (pic attached).

I am wondering if there needs to be a screen in it since my NOS screen won't fit and the new one seems ready to install.

Thanks,
Dave

I would not install an expansion valve
Without a screen or filter before the valve.

Thank you Greg.

So the expansion valve is stamped on the top with R134A. Can it be used with an R12 system as I want to stay original? With the issue of the screen and the stamping on the top, I am tempted to pay a bit more and purchase a NOS expansion valve.

Or I could always cut the screen and crimp it to shorten it and make it fit the new valve.

TXVs are VERY refrigerant specific as far as operating temperatures, [pressures and calculated super-heat, so although the valve would be close I would suggest going with an R-12 valve.

Thank you Greg. I'll pick up an original NOS one. After tearing out everything, this is definitely a task I don't feel like doing twice.

Make sure you clean and flush everything and evacuate for moisture before filling or you will be back in there...

My next steps are to:

-Reflush condensor
-Flush hoses
-Drain old oil from compressor
-Reoil components per shop manual with mineral oil
-Replace Drier
-Reconnect components
-Take to AC shop
---Evacuate system
---Pull vacuum
---Fill with R12
-Say prayer
-Test system

The shop I use for R12 is an hour from home and the owner is very knowledgeable on classic R12 systems. So this leads to a few questions.

-Should I wait to connect the new Drier until I get to the shop and then have him immediately evacuate the system?
-Should I flush the new evaporator prior to installing
-Anything else I am missing?

Thanks

Yes

certainly can't hurt.

-Anything else I am missing?
Be sure and pressure test the system before you charge it.  Leaks that don't show up under vacuum will appear under pressure. When you have the system under a vacuum the o'rings are pulled into any open space in the line, and when under pressure the travel is in the opposite direction, away from the tubing and fittings
