I have painted four 1956 Cadillac with all but one being black so color matching wasn't an issue. The other one was in Canary Yellow, which also didn't matter if it was exact. Now, however, I am painting a convertible for a friend and I want to be correct with it. The code color is Sonic Blue. My question is: Going to a paint shop, would they be able to still bring up the VIN paint code number and mix it properly? Where do you go when trying to be as exact as possible?
We don't have a color chart to match nor any part on the car that would be a good candidate to match a color spray sample comparison.
I don't want this guy going to a show someday and park next to another Sonic Blue car and have his be a shade or two off!
Thanks for the guidance before I pull the trigger. (pun intended!)

Chuck,

Not sure if you have the old DuPont Color library link (maybe you forgot  ;)) here is the link -> http://historicalcolorlibrary.axaltacs.com/hcl/

They have the old formula so not sure if your local supplier would be able to mix it with the older format.

I have the two tone on mine Sonic Blue and Cobalt Blue, I gave the shop the paint chips for both from DuPont site and were able to get them mix, although not sure if it is 100% but it is a real close match.

Good luck..!

When I completed the restoration of my Sonic Blue 56 convertible PPG came the closest to maatching the original color.  None of the other brands in my area were even close, even with the original mixing codes.  they explained the original mixing tints were no longer availabe.
I  used a single stage urethane on my convertible.  A pretty onve when finished.

Wow! Thanks for all the great help with this. I'm deciding to at least seek out the PPG mix as apparently it's as close to original as you can get 60 years down the road. I'm excited to get it mixed and see for myself.
Is there a drawback in doing it in base/clear? That's what I'm used to but if the majority tell me differently, I'll go single stage. My first yellow 1956 was in PPG single stage and it looked great, too. I'm open.
Again, you guys are wonderful!
