Hello ,
My question is . On a 1970 Cadillac Coupe DeVille  does it show the 472 decal
On the  snorkel of air cleaner ?  Or anywhere else on the engine ?  My 1970 shows no sign of the 472 decal.

   Thanks,
         Bill

Thank You Brian and Chris,
I wonder what is the thought process  for adding a decal on some years and eliminating it on other years .  Personally i like the call out of the cubic inches on the air filter . It would be interesting to know the reason . It most likely all boils down to cost . Or problems with the supplier . These little changes on different models and years  sparks my curiosity .

I think it had more to do with the change in design of the air cleaner, now there was no place
to put the decal. Its your car, you can trim that decal and make it fit if you like it. Be advised that
would cost you points in a real car show.

Not really sure of the reason.
Both of my 70’s are completely original under the hood and there are no 472 decals or 500 decals on the air cleaner.

They were on the 69 air cleaner.

Hello Cape cod Fleetwood,
i do realize the snorkel is shorter on the 1970 models. But to think there was no place to put the decal doesnt work for me . Its not thats it's that important but i have to wonder what they were thinking .

Could it be that with the 500 being available in the Eldorado, there was not much point in advertising to owners of the rest of the fleet that they had the smaller 472?

Lol, that’s probably it. Then they went and confused Americans by adding the 8.2 Litre badge for the 500.

The addition of the thermpac (I think that's what they called it) may be the
reason the decal was deleted in 1970.

If Cadillac wanted a decal on the air cleaner, they would have put a decal on the air cleaner.

There's plenty of room to put a decal on a '70 air cleaner.  They could have put it on the lid if the 472 call out was too small for the snout.

Hello chrisntam,
That is the best answer yet . And it is probably as simple as that.

It is interesting that 'everybody' knows the 500 as 8.2 liter but how many (especially in the USA) knows 472 or 425 in liters?   The 425 is the strange one because from what I remember that engine was pretty much at the peak of our failed metric conversion.   I knew my Pontiac 301 as a 4.9 and my Buick was a 3.8 in the same period.   When did Ford start the 5.0 badge?  Real early 80's?   I would say that would be the first American engine to be widely known in liters.

Outside the USA in that era were the engines known my liters?  Or because they were American engines and cars were they in inches still?   I don't ever recall people converting 'foreign' engine sizes to inches.   A Harley is always in inches and a Honda was CC.

Another funny thing is that Cadillac, an American brand can spell Litres correctly, yet Americans still type it as Liters.

Hello and Merry Christmas ,
This has nothing to do with the decal . But is does have something to do with the Cadillac 472 and 500 engine . I was I Florida both on the east coast and west coast over the past year and went into the Everglades on a Airboat . Both trips featured the Cadillac 472 and 500 engines . Direct drive no transmission. I question the drivers and they all agree that the Cadillac engines both 472 and 500 are the most dependable  easy starting  and most powerful engine for air boats . The only problem is because they are direct drive they do not have reverse . I asked the guy about  the supply of these motors and what they do is keep a close eye on rust bucket cars with good engines and always checking the salvage yards .

Bill,

The answer about the decal is that there is no answer.

The 472 came out in 1968 and I guess with a larger engine there is some hoopla and they wanted something under the hood as a call out to the displacement.  They did it in 69 as well but for some reason not in 1970.  One less thing to fret over with your engine compartment cleanup.

I have to report that it wasn't I, as I was asleep when another Moderator saw what you posted, and took it upon himself to remove it as it was deemed to be insulting, not called for, and not Cadillac or LaSalle related.

Your comment on how American's spell is insulting, not called for or Cadillac LaSalle related either.
