I took the carpet out of the trunk. Under it was a mat that felt like damp cardboard. Under that was a rigid material almost like a mud flap.

I searched for it on line and could only find mats and carpet etc. I have the carpet i need the rest. Any special words for a  search?

I found this. I  have it under the carpet in the cabin. Think this will do?
10mm Fiberglass Car Hood Floor Sound Proofing Deadener Heat Noise Insulation Mat. It has a foil top material.

In my '74 Eldorado, it had felt carpet and then the "damp cardboard" that you mentioned but nothing else. Do you have any pics of the material you are looking for? Here is a pic of what was under my carpet. The smaller piece was on the upper shelf and under is is what was under the carpet.

I think that material is "EVA" as described in this link:

As you noted, it holds water so I wasn't too excited about re-using it.  At MaR's recommendation, I applied Noico Butyl/Foil sound deadening in my trunk and will be putting the felt carpet over it.  The Butyl is impervious to water.  Link:

No pic's MaR went out with the trash. It looked like it was made from pressed chips of some kind.
Hornetball's pic made me think it's just there to eliminate the hump and bumb's in the body.
I think that over time carpet would settle into them. So the material was used as a filler. Maybe pieces of masonite would serve the same purpose.
