Big Fins

I have a close friend in the process of hoping to win an auction for purchasing a 78 CDV. He gave me the VIN in hopes of being able to track the car and maybe get a few service receipts from the selling dealer to verify the mileage. He saw and drove the car and claims it looks all original. Being off the road for a number of years, it needs this and that, but mostly cosmetics.

Is he chasing a ghost or is there some merit to his quest? I told him to send in a request to the GM Heritage Center and they could give him the dealer name to which the car was originally shipped, but that would be about the extent of it. Any thing else that the VIN could tell him?
