Hello all,

No prizes are involved - just bragging rights.

Keeping things on the lighter side, I am posting the attached photo to see how many readers can guess what this part is, and from whence it came.  I suspect a handful of you will know the answer.  And, I hope the rest of you will be enlightened.  I will post the answer tomorrow.

Hello all,

I am glad you all maintained the light-heartedness of the post.  MaR's link to the video clip is a newer version of one that was done years earlier - by the same guy I believe.

Cadman-iac's answer (via PM to me) is that the part is an oil cooler of some sort, but from whence he knew not.

The part is the transmission fluid cooler in a Hydra-Matic from a World War II tank.  Yesterday's photo shows the cooler itself.  The photos attached to this post show where the cooler is installed in the "oil pan" of the Hydra-Matic, and the case of the Hydra-Matic in place on the oil pan.  Note the U.S. Army (O)live (D)rab green paint on the oil pan.  The case is some green paint I had on the shelf.

Transmission fluid flows within the cooler.  The cavity in the oil pan into which the cooler is installed is filled with water/engine coolant isolated from the transmission fluid.  Several plumbing fittings (not shown) allow for the circulation of the water/engine coolant)

Unlike the stamped steel oil pans used on passenger car transmissions, which are bolted on, the case of the tank transmission is fitted with studs which go through holes in the rail of the oil pan, and the oil pan is secured by nuts on the studs.  All very heavy-duty, as befits a tank.

My specimen did not come with a bell housing or fluid coupler, but the pieces shown - case, oil pan, cooler (inside pan), and extension housing - are north of 100 pounds.  If I cannot find a good Hydra-Matic core from a '41 or '42 passenger car in the next few months, I will use the tank Hydra-Matic in the first installment of my video series on the history of automatic transmissions used in Cadillacs beginning in 1941.
