There are computers that just spend all their time searching any data that they can find on the internet.   They are looking for specific patterns that match personal data that then can be sold to the highest bidder for what ever purpose the winning bigger chooses.  Maybe they want to sell you something you may want,  maybe they want to do harm.

The patterns they are looking for are things with an @ in them that are likely an email address.   123-456-7890 is likely a phone number.   123-45-6789 is real gold because its likely a USA social security number.   They also look for patterns that match banks and other money transfer like services.

That is why if contact info is posted on public sites they usually will do something like say  mail at mailserver dot com instead of using the @ and .   or they will say text me at one 2 3   4 five 6  s ev en 89.   The 'bots' don't catch that as a phone number but the human reading the ad can usually figure it out.

How often do you get calls where there is no one there?   That is one of these 'services' that is wanting to get more money for their lists.    They will offer a list of likely phone numbers for say $500 but if you are willing to pay $5000 they will sell you a list that their computer called and verified that most likely a human picked up and said hello.   That list would be more valuable because the numbers on it are not only real but connect to humans that will likely at least pick up the phone vs letting it ring or go to voicemail.
